Cupramontana - Infiorata of Cupramontana

In Cupramontana, the capital of the Verdicchio wine, the day of Corpus Domini, with its 1,600 metres square Infiorata (Flower Festival) on which the procession passes, represents one of the greatest days of the year. This rite, passed down through generations, is rooted in the folk tradition; originally, the children of the peasants of the Confraternity of the Blessed Sacrament (with headquarters in the church of Santa Maria), armed with wicker baskets full of petals of simple country flowers scattered them on the ground before the passing of the Blessed Sacrament led by the priest but it’s after World war II, namely since 1947, that started the realization as we know it of real floral paintings along the streets of town.
Some pupil from the secondary school, coordinated by an art education teacher, create drawings then submitted to the heads of the various streets participating in the procession, who choose the most beautiful and the most feasibe ones. The following step is entrusted to the wood and iron craftsmen that in the discretion of their shops realize the molds, to scale. Afterwards is the realization of the representations of sacred figures, delicate embroidery and remarkable geometries that exalt the routes of the congregation through the streets of the historic centre. In the early morning on Sunday, on Corpus Domini, the residents of the streets involved and not only, gather along the streets of this medieval village and once extracted from their baskets the precious flower petals, with their expert hands realize beautiful colored carpets in an explosion of colors and perfumes using the yellow of the broom, the red of the sainfoin, the white lily and a myriad of other flowers. Also, families whose homes overlook the streets involved in the procession decorate their doors, balconies and windows with flowers and drapes.
