The Abbey of San Pietro al Conero is situated on Mount Conero at about 450 m. above sea level. It was a former Benedictine Hermitage. The abbey now retains the Romanesque church, later restored in the early thirteenth century. It has three naves, divided by different pillars. The bell tower dates back to thirteenth century, while the façade was renotated in the eighteenth-century. The most remarkable parts of the church are the sculptures. The twelfth century capitals are decorated with zoomorphic subjects, that are typical of the symbolic Romanesque bestiary . The capitals of the crypt, dating back to the eleventh century, feature cubic shapes and Corinthian style. The ancient Benedictine monastery next to the church has been transformed into an elegant and comfortable hotel.
