The Reservation occupies a wide territory which includes the municipalities of Acqualagna, Cagli, Fermignano, Fossombrone and Urbino. The Furlo Canyon (or pass) lies along the original path of the Flaminia road, in its section flanking the Candigliano river, a tributary of the Metauro river. It is therefore a definitely peculiar landscape, which joins the harshness of the rocky walls and a rich variety of trees, wide meadows and grazing land. Some rare and bearing a great naturalistic interest species deserve being mentioned, such as black brooms, buckthorns, irises, a variety of orchids, strawberry trees and honeyberries. The show of foliage, which can be better admired from a couple of panoramic terraces on the Pietralata mountain, consists mostly of oak woods, manna ashes and poplars, whose leaves in Autumn turn to a variety of red, yellow and orange shades. On the palette, anyway, the summer green of the park’s many holm oaks is not missing.
