San Costanzo

From San Costanzo you can enjoy a grandstand view out over the Adriatic Sea to the wide valley of the Metauro river, up to Fano. It was populated since the eighth century BC; in the fifteenth century  it was an important walled town under the rule of Fano. The old part, surrounded by the Malatesta walls, was built in the 14th and 15th centuries; it still retains the layout of the fifteenth century town, including the towers, where an esoteric Nativity is set up at Christmas. The town's tourist attractions are: the Municipal Picture Gallery,  the Archaeological Room of the protohistoric town and the Picene necropolis, both housed in the town hall, the former 18th century elegant palace of the Cassi counts. Here a permanent exhibition of the castle masks can be admired too:  they were created by Anna Lorenzetti and feature fancy, refiness and uniqueness. Some of them are also used for parades in Italy's most important masked courses.  It is also worth visiting: the Teatro della Concordia, home to a prose season; the Collegiate church and the Church of Sant'Agostino. The Polentara Festival ( Polenta festival) is held yearly on the first Sunday of Lent.
