The Appennine pass of Forca di Presta is placed 1550 meters above sea level at the feet of Mount Vettore on the border between Marche and Umbria. The area, exceptionally important by the environmental point of view, is a strategic starting point for excursions on the Sibillini mountains. Close to the pass, the National Park of Sibillini Mountains created a track, walkable by persons suffering motor difficulties, called “Sentiero per tutti”(“Track for all”), which begins near the Alpini lodge “G.Giacomini”, winds entirely beyond 1500 meters above sea level and is open to pedestrians, bikers and the disabled. At the end of the track, a wooden gangway leads to a panoramic viewpoint wherefrom the beauty of the Della Laga mountains as well as the towns of Arquata del Tronto and Spelonga can be admired. Not far from Forca di Presta there is Castelluccio di Norcia, famous because of lentils plantations and of the charming colors of Pian Grande, which every year offers to visitors its superb blooming. Arquata del Tronto is the only municipality in Europe whose territory is divided between two national parks, i.e. The Sibillini Mountains and the Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga parks. In past times, Arquata was a point of contention between the cities of Ascoli and Norcia; the latter prevailed and administered it till 1815. The most ancient road joining these two cities crossed precisely Forca di Presta.
