The little church of St. Mauro is in the lower part of the Tronto valley, in the hamlet Stella di Monsampolo. It’s what is left of the old monastic complex originally dedicated to St. Benedict, whose foundations date back to the first half of the 8th century. The first documents date back to the end of the 10th century when it was at the dependence of the historic abbey of Montecassino. The church, whose façade was ruined after the building of a wall of bricks, was built between the 13th and 14th century, whereas the last part of the apse is as old as the crypt and as the origins of the monastery. The crypt is perfectly preserved . Its characteristic shape and irregular vaults made with irregular stones , debris and river pebbles make it a rare example of early Medieval architecture .
