San Marcello is located on the highest hill to the left of the Esino river, at 233 metres a.s.l. Originally called Monte San Marcello, the centre takes the name of the early 4th century Saint and Pope who sent San Settimio, the proto-bishop and evangelist to Jesi. The town has castle walls set out in a rectangular layout with quadrangular and cylindrical towers. Sites of notable architectural interest include the Renaissance-style Palazzo Marcelli, with a bossaged portal and a small loggia with four arches; the Church of Santa Maria del Rosario, which contains a painting by Andrea da Jesi and the Church of San Marcello (17th century) with two fine paintings. The ‘Ferrari’ theatre, the town’s historic theatre, is well worth a visit, as indeed is the Telephone Museum, housed in Palazzo Marcelli, which exhibits telephones from all over the world. The hilly countryside providing and interesting landscape is particularly suited to wine growing. Wines produced are the Esino, Rosso Piceno, Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi classico and the Lacrima di Morro d'Alba.
