The Falconara Zoo Park covers about 60,000 square metres on a hill of Falconara Marittima. It was founded in 1968 as a private initiative and as an amusement park for children with games, swings, slides and small houses of fairy tales, and by hosting only a few animals, especially domestic. A few years later, the park began to evolve enriched by new animal species such as birds and felines, becoming a Zoo. Over the years it has also expanded its technical staff, introducing biologists responsible for the teaching and educational aspect of the Park and other professionals, such as veterinaries and zoologists. Really numerous are the school children who go to the Zoo on a school trip to enjoy guided tours and specific educational workshops for age groups (children or teenagers). Also adults participate in the programs organized by the zoo.
The zoo in the Marche is committed to saving animal species which are in danger of becoming extinct, such as giraffes and gibbons, and it also takes part in campaigns aiming at their reproduction. It’s the only one in Italy and in Europe which protects the okapi, one of the last remaining ancestors of the giraffe. In the zoo you can find a male and a female okapi.
