Filottrano- Abbey of Santa Maria di Storaco

The Abbey of Santa Maria di Storaco was built on a hill to the northwest of Filottrano, close to the nearby castle of Storaco.

It was destroyed along with the castle between the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, and it was replaced by a semicircular niche made of bricks dedicated to the Virgin Mary.

In order to accommodate the growing number of believers, the church was enlarged in 1573 and in 1595, enclosing the old niche, which was in the back of the altar.

The modern church is closed for public worship since 1986 and the wooden statue of the worshipped Vergin of Storaco can be found at the nearby church of Sant'Ignazio di Lojola.

The abbey, which was very flourishing and powerful in the past, still maintains its charm.
