Mercatello sul Metauro - Church and Convent of S. Francesco

Formerly known as Pieve d'Ico (probably because of the icon of Our Lady of Grace), it dates back to the thirteenth century. In the early Gothic style, the façade in clean stones and flat surface still maintains the oldest architectural shapes of that time. The sandstone rose  above the doorway is decorated with a stained glass window with the Franciscan emblem. The bell tower is back to the church and houses three bells dated 1574 and 1613. Inside, the building has a single nave, with a trussed roof and quadrilateral apse adorned by a beautiful late Gothic triumphal arch. On the right side of the aisle it is instead a splendid fresco of the Umbrian school of the '400. On the altar there is a nine panels altarpiece depicting a Virgin Mary and Saints (about 1345) panel painting attributed to Giovanni Baronzio from Rimini. In the sacristy, it has set a splendid painting by Claudio Ridolfi depicting the Baptism of Jesus.
