Serravalle di Chienti - Piano della Minutella - Monte Corneto - Monte Scalette (Minutella Plain – Mount Corneto – Mount Scalette)

Minutella Plain is a panoramic area within the Serravalle di Chienti municipality. Its mostly mountainous territory, covered with woods and grazing land, offers beautiful views and is spread with sources, which since ancient times were used to water the livestock. Renowned are the nearby Colforito Plains, a beautiful group of partly cultivated uplands about 800 meters above sea level,  which during Spring turn into a boundless, colourful sweep. This was by definition a “land of passage and border”, a cradle of civility and prosperity, but also the theatre of fierce battles. The position of Serravalle, on the road which connects Marche and Umbria, facilitated in history the passage of men of all kinds, including troops, merchants, celebrities. Between the attractions of this area are MuPA, the Archaeological Paleontologic Museum, which shows fossil findings dating back to Inferior and Middle Pleistocene, the beautiful St. Mary of Plestia Church, Botte dei Varano (“Varano’s Barrel”), an artificial channel which Giulio Cesare Varano had dug in order to reclaim Plestino lake on Colfiorito upland, and another parallel channel with travertine stone walls, created by the Romans, whose memory had gone lost. Here, in 217 b.C., the fierce battle between Carthaginians and Centennius’ Romans was fought, and according to a legend Hannibal buried here on a hill, hiding it from the sight of men, his precious cuirass, to honour the dead. Piano della Minutella is a point of passage in the middle of the mountains, from Mount Corneto 1130 meters above sea level and Mount Salette, 1109 meters, to the highest peak of Mount Pennino, with its 1571 meters, up to Bocchetta of Scurosa pass and to the charming Scurosa Valley which, through beautiful paths, lead up to the city of Sefro.
