Castle of Lanciano and Museum

The Castle is surrounded by a very old suggestive park. Over the centuries it was restored several times. Between 1382 and 1385 Giovanni da Varano had the stronghold built to protect the north-east boundary of the town of Camerino. Then the castle lost its military function and in 1489 it was turned into a noble residence by Giovanna Malatesta. When the dynasty of the Varanos came to an end the property of Lanciano was owned by several noble families, among which the Voglias, the Rosas, the Rossettis and finally the Bandinis, who bought it from Pope Benedict XIV in 1754. Marquese Alessandro Bandini had the whole building restored and enlarged with the Gallery on the first floor decorated by an architect from Camerino, Giovanni Antinori. The last representative of the family was Maria Sofia Giustiniani Bandini, who donated the castle and all her properties to the Bishopric of Camerino in 1977. Both the castle and park can be visited. The 18th-century staircase and the rooms with their furnishings, paintings and curios, that belonged to the family Giustiniani Bandini, still preserve the typical fascination of old noble residences.
