Caldarola - The fortified village of Vestignano

Ludwig II assigned the fortified village of Vestignano to the monastery of Casauria (Abruzzi region); over the centuries Vestignano was also under the Da Varano family. It is surrounded by forests and still retains massive walls, a cylindrical tower, square shaped towers, narrow streets, low houses with sloping roof, arches and underground passages. Outside the walls is the thirteenth-century Church of San Martino, rebuilt in the sixteenth century. The Church boasts a large number of valuable paintings made by Simone and Andrea De Magistris and Nobile da Lucca.
