Monte San Martino is located in the inland Marche region area in the heart of the Azzurri mountains. The origins of this municipality can be traced back to Roman times, according to numerous archaeological finds that include coins, vases, weapons and tombs, especially along the main streets. The municipality can be called ‘the capital of the pink apple’, because of the tradition of growing the fruit in the surrounding countryside. Moreover, during the festival of the pink apple (11 November, at the same time as the feast of the patron saint) various types of apple are put on show to create a sort of apple museum. This centre of considerable scenic-environmental interest stands in a splendid panoramic position at 600m a.s.l. on high ground steeply overhanging the Tenna river valley in a very picturesque setting. Worthy of note – housed in the picture gallery of the Church of San Martino Vescovo – are three polyptychs by the Crivelli brothers, two by Vittore and one by Carlo and Vittore (the Monte San Martino Polyptych. The latter of these is the only one known to have been created by the two brothers together, depicting the Madonna and Child with Saints; ignored by the critics for many years, it remains an extremely important document for reflecting not only on the collaboration between the two brothers, something not found to date elsewhere, but also on the relationship of Carlo with his collaborators). There is also a polyptych by Girolamo di Giovanni da Camerino and a fresco by Vincenzo Pagani da Monterubbiano. The church contains an impressive organ made by Giovanni Fedeli. Another element worthy of mention is the altar, by the Neapolitan school, at the base of which are some prized maiolicas. In the town square, the palaces of the 15th /16th century nobles Urbani, Palombi, Giansanti and Ricci. Four castle gates: Delle Grazie, Coccione, Parco Rimembranza and del Tornello. Another important monument is the ancient Ospicium Inimicorum prison. Other monuments and places of interest are: The ‘Armindo Ricci’ civic picture gallery, the Eagle Monument in honour of the Alpine troops, the Monument in memory of those who died in World Wars I and II, and the Municipal Theatre (a former church), the deconsecrated Church of Santa Maria delle Grazie and the Church of Sant'Agostino. The chief event of Monte San Martino is called ‘Knowledge and Taste of the Pink Apple’ and takes place during the first week of November. The festival is designed to safeguard and promote a true agroalimentary delight native to the Monti Sibillini foothills; the Monti Sibillini Pink apple has been a Slow Food Presidium since 2008.
