This traditional medieval fight on horseback (La Quintana) has been celebrated every year in Ascoli Piceno since medieval times (originally dating back possibly to Roman Times). Every first Sunday in August, in order to celebrate St. Emidio, the first bishop of the city and patron saint, it is here organized this most thrilling tournament where clarions and the roll of drums echo around lanes, streets and the valley, with thousands of people in their colorful and elegant medieval outfits crowding the city and bringing it back to an antique and glorious past. For some time now there is also an edition of the Quintana at night, on the second Saturday of July; this event is renewed every year since 1955 when, after a period of suspension, it took place again. In short, a thrilling event!
