Muccia – Hermitage Sanctuary of The Blessed Rizzerio

The Hermitage Sanctuary of Blessed Rizzerio is located at 730 meters above sea level on the tomb of the Blessed Rizzerio, the friar who was one of the closest companions and followers of S. Francesco.
He also devoted his life to poverty, despite its noble origins, and retired to lead a hermit life in a cave in the hills of Muccia, where he died. The local church of San Giacomo Maggiore - which held his remains - was demolished in 1948-49 . Prof. Cesare Lami, surgeon and devotee, found the cave and the tomb and around it, on the traces of the old foundations , rebuilt the church which is today the sanctuary. It is currently used as a tourism facility, with 21 rooms and halls for events, located in an ideal itinerary among Assisi, Cascia and Loreto. To be mentioned, the chipped tower contrasting with the solidity of the central body of the Hermitage and symbolizes the futility of material goods, in opposition to the strength of the cross of Christ.
