Municipal Theatre "G. Piermarini

Built in 1805, the Municipal Theatre was designed by Giuseppe Piermarini, the architect from Foligno who created the theatre “La Scala” in Milan. The pictorial decorations, dated between 1810 and 1812, are attributed to the painter Spiridione Mattei. The elegant structure consists of three orders of boxes plus the gallery. In the hall different projects, posters of shows and photos are exposed, with the dedications of the greatest artists who performed there. During the renovations of the building, archaeological finds which can be visited emerged, such as the remains of a population structure of the Piceno age and a Roman bath complex dating from the first-second centuries. Every year a theatre and a concert season are held, which are very successful among the people from Matelica.
In the last few years the foyer of the theatre has been turned into a wine shop where it's possible for visitors to taste and buy local produce, above all the Verdicchio di Matelica wine.
