On Good Friday, in Monterubbiano (FM), is held the solemn “Procession of the Dead Christ” in which a plastered papier-mâché statue which dates back to the 14th Century is carried in procession through the streets of the village, lying on a coffin of the 17th Century decorated with fine velvet and resting on an artistic hearse built on three levels. The hearse with the coffin of The Dead Christ is accompanied by women dressed in mourning, walk-on Romans and members of the Brotherhood of Our Lady of Suffrage. The tradition of this form of popular piety predates the 14th Century. The re-enactment of the Passion is held only in even years and it begins at 03,00 p.m. with the preaching of the last words of Jesus on the cross. The beautiful village of Monterubbiano, awarded the Orange Flag by the Italian Touring Club, with this heartfelt procession also celebrates the coming of Easter.
