Urbino- Clemente XI in Urbino

Giovanni Francesco Albani (Pope Clemente XI) was born in Urbino on 23rd July 1649 from a noble family coming from Albania. He took interest in the political and religious rebirth of Albania and he greatly contributed, although temporarily, to the unification of the Church. He tried in vain to convert the Russian Tsar Peter the Great to Catholicism.

He became pope at the age of 51. He was a great patron of the arts in Rome and his birthplace Urbino, where he ordered restauration works in the Ducal Palace and in the Archbishop’s palace, as well as the building of a school for the youth and he granted privileges to the university.

He died in 1721, after a troublesome pontificate due to the War of the Spanish Succession and the dispute with French Jansenists.
