Around 1300 the populations of the valley floor of the upper course of the “Nera” River were increasingly exposed to the dangers of raids and incursions. To find security and freedom they decided to get together and lay the foundations of the castle
Castrum Sancti Angeli, which they placed it under the protection of the A
rchangel Michael. The medieval origins of Castelsantangelo sul Nera are still visible today in the urban layout of the village:
the triangular castrum with a square tower
(turris capitis), city walls and gates. From the look-out tower of the castle originate the fortified walls, still preserving, in some sections, trenches and battlements. In its territory there are the sources of the river Nera and the bottling factory of mineral water.
The historical centre boasts numerous churches: the
Romanesque church of San Martino (14th century), with a bell tower with mullioned windows, is decorated with frescoes attributed to
Paolo Bontulli from Percanestro; the fourteenth century church of
Santo Stefano preserves a stone baptismal font from the same period; the sixteenth century Church of
San Sebastiano is adorned with frescoes of the seventeenth century (
it was damaged by the earthquake occurred in central Italy in 2016) ;
The monastery of San Liberatore, built on the ruins of a thirteenth-century castle, perhaps has the name of the Christ’s fresco adorning the apse. The area surrounding the castle is also home to the Romanesque church of
Santa Maria di Castellare and the Parish Church, which houses an altarpiece probably made by
Paolo da Visso in 1470.
