On the ridge between the valleys of Cremone and Ete Morto, overlooking the Sibillini Mountains, the town of Mogliano, famous for its flourishing craft linked to wicker and leather goods processing, is surrounded by olive trees decorating the surrounding landscape: it still retains some stretches of the city walls and of the fortress, built by Gentile da Mogliano in the fourteenth century. Moreover, along the main street some remarkable monuments can be noticed: the eighteenth century parish building of S. Gregorio, preceded by a large Baroque stairway and holding a valuable painting made by Durante Nobili from Caldarola in 1546; the sixteenth-century Forti palace; the ancient chapel and the adjacent hurch of Archpriest called Santa Maria, which - built in the eighteenth century in the high altar - houses the altarpiece of Lorenzo Lotto - The Madonna in glory with Saints Giovanni Battista, Antonio da Padova, Maria Maddalena e Giuseppe. (Oil on canvas, 330 x 215 cm). The work was commissioned in 1547 by the mayor of Mogliano, Jacomo Boninfante, at the price of 130 gold crowns to be paid in several installments; the cost also included the gilded wooden frame, made by Bartolomeo intaiador de San Cassano. The altarpiece was completed in 1548 and given to the community by the pupil Durante Nobili. The original frame is kept in the adjacent sacristy. Also che Churches of S. Giuseppe and S. Colomba are of great interest, both dating back to the eighteenth century and adorned with elegant panelled ceilings. The latter hosts a natural reproduction chapel of the Santo Sepolcro ("Holy Sepulchre") in Jerusalem. At the Sanctuary of SS. Crocifisso (Crucifix) an image depicting 'Christ Crucified Rising from His Sepulchre' is venerated, a fresco of the end of '400. As a resulf ot a miraculous event occurred in the year 1809, the Church, rebuilt in an elegant neoclassical style on G. Lucatelli’s design, was acknowledged as sanctuary by the Viceroy of Italy of that time, Eugene Beauharnais.
Of particular interest is the “Apollo” Theatre: inaugurated in 1844, it has a horseshoe shape with thirty eight stages on three orders.
Among the events to be mentioned is Mogliano 1744; an historical re-enactment that takes place every year on the anniversary of the Patron Saint of Mogliano, St. John the Baptist, when the splendour of the 18th C. in Mogliano is evoqued.
