By request of the Montefeltro and Della Rovere dukes of Urbino, the palace was built by architect Francesco di Giorgio Martini upstream the Metauro river, on the site of an earlier citadel, in the second half of the XV century. Entry to the palace takes place after crossing a wonderful renaissance court, called exactly “The court of honour”, which is encircled with no less than twenty-two travertine columns, which make up a perimetral arcade clearly inspired by the Urbino Ducal Palace.  After a deliberation by the City Council of Urbania, civil weddings can be celebrated either here or in the historical caves of the palace.
