Genga - Cave of the River and Cave of the Wind

The Cave of the River was discovered on 28 June 1948 by the speleologists Mario Marchetti, Paolo Beer and Carlo Pegorari. Here are traces of sporadic attendance of man during the Upper Palaeolithic period. After more than twenty years, a new generation of cavers discovered, at a much higher altitude, the entrance to the Great Cave of the Wind, which allowed the entry into the mountain. The Cave of the River, with two entrances that open almost to the level of the current course of the Sentino river, is on several floors trending labyrinthine and communicates with the Great Cave of the Wind. From San Vittore di Genga take the road that leads to Sassoferrato and crosses the Frasassi Gorge. The artificial entrance to the underground system is located here and it starts with the crossing of the Great Cave of the Wind with the Cave of the River. Another entrance to the cave is located further downstream and is also visible just above the water surface. The Mayor of Genga has prohibited the access to the Cave of the River since June 2001.
