Nicola Vaccaj Theatre

The theatre named after Nicola Vaccaj was finished in 1795 but it was only inaugurated in 1797. The approval for the development and the acceptance of the project, which is dated back to 1787, was given by the Cardinal Carandini. In his honour, the theatre was called “Theatre of the Eagle”, the double-headed predatory which is present in the family crest. The design of the interior part, the façade as well as the decorations were all entrusted to the architect and painter Giuseppe Lucatelli and Luigi Fontana. The harmony in proportions, the close match between the architectural forms and the required volumes as well as each baroque moldings and decorations follow the Neoclassical style of which Luigi Fontana was the first and greatest artist in the Macerata area. In 2008, the theatre was destroyed by an involuntary fire which was caused by the restoration works of the roof and, thus, most of the paintings by Fontana went damaged.
