The National park of the Sibillini Mountains is a protected natural area which safeguards the homonymous mountain range between the regions of Marche and Umbria on the territory of the Ascoli Piceno, Fermo, Macerata and Perugia provinces. It covers a surface of about 71,437 hectares on mostly mountainous land. The landscape is dominated by the calcareous range of the Appennine Mountains. Many plant species are typical of this mountain territory, such as the Alpine anemone, the mountain asphodel, the Appenine cinquefoils and the rare Alpine edelweiss. Also trees concerned with the Autumn foliage are there: the yellow of chestnuts, which during this season let their fruit fall down, joins the crimson of maples and the orange shades of beeches.Another colour dots the mountain slopes: the pink of the Sibillini Mountains apples, whose irregular and slightly flattened shape is streaked with this colour. It is a fruit recently rediscovered, given value by a cultivation requiring no special treatments which makes it intrinsically biological, but its origins are very ancient: it is even mentioned in a work by the great Latin poet Horace.
