Municipal Theatre

During a reunion of the Holy Congregation that took place on February 1792, it was decided to promote the construction of the City Theatre, drawing on the project made by two architects, Carlo Rusca from Treia and Giuseppe Lucatelli from Mogliano. The representatives of some of the noblest families of Treia signed a regular contract on February 13, 1974, in which they expressed their commitment to finance the whole building project and each family guaranteed to donate a sack of grain for 8 years to face related expenses.
The building project stated that the site designed for the theatre was the area where there was the Church of S. Martino, oratory of the fraternity of Mercy, in a dilapidated state; indeed, on August 1801 it was demolished and this area was bought to allow the construction of the theatre.
Most of the bricks that belonged to the demolished Church were used to the construction of the current Cathedral. At the end of 1805 the construction of theatre’s roof was completed; the works to accomplish the atrium of the theatre started on August 17, 1815 and the interior works finished on August 20, 1817.
In the meanwhile, Patrizio De Mattia and Giambattista Bartoloni took over to the previously construction crew. In 1865, the roman painter Silverio Capparoni, pupil of Podesti from Ancona, painted the famous battle of Corrado of Antiochia, that shows the siege of Montecchio, on the tarpaulin of theatre’s curtain. This work of art was inspired by a painting of Tommaso Minardi, that was kept into the Georgica Academy.
In 1881, It was founded the “Theatrical Society” composed by the townspeople who owned the box seats of the theatre and since this year it became a Condominial Theatre. On December 1961, the ordinance of the Italian Ministry of Education declared that the Condominial Theatre of Treia was “of historical interest particularly important” according to the law n. 1089/1939. The Superintendence of Cultural heritage of the Marche Region included the Theatre of Treia in the list of the most important historical theatres of the region and on December 23, 1982, it also approved its restoration project. The restoration works started on April 1983, but some economic and administrative issues hinded and blocked them; so, in 1988, the 42 co-owners, in order to avoid that the construction works could be affected by the fact that the theatre was a private property, decided to hand over their ownership shares on the box seats against the payment of a symbolic figure of £.1000 each. This was a considerable act of kindness and the citizens of Treia proved to have a significant public spirit. Thanks to their contribution, the theatre became property of the Town Hall of Treia, that only shell out £.42.000 (a low figure). This was a particular event, indeed press agencies and also media were interested about it. The restoration works were finally completed, and the Municipal Theatre was inaugurated on July 12, 2002, showing once again his renewed ancient splendor, with the national premiere of the play “Opera sull’acqua”. At present, the theatre is a landmark for citizens of Treia, thanks to the performances of the most important theatrical companies who animate the theatrical seasons. The theatrical calendar offers more than 30 pieces and events for each season.
