Treia – Giardino di Villa Luzi o Votalarca (Villa Luzi Garden, alias “Votalarca”)

The villa, surrounded by dependences and farm annexes, was built in 1737 on a hill on the northern side of the Potenza valley, near Treia, based on drawings by Angelo Maria Nucelli, from Cingoli; it was restructured in the beginning of the XIX century upon a project by architect Andrea Vinci and enlarged in 1920.

Close to a nice Italian garden and to avenues lined with plane, elm and fir trees, there is a XIX century English park where oak, palm, cedar, pine and linden trees grow, and a smartly designed net of alleys makes it look wider than it really is. At the entrance of a little wood, in the centre of a lawn, there is an obelisk, a work by Ireneo Aleandri, which bears at its base an inscription stating that the creation of the garden was started in 1926 by Nicola Luzi and was to be considered completed in 1851.

Inside, a temple dedicated to the god Neptune overlooks a water basin surrounded by a little colonnade, with a seahorse on top of it and a statue, inside, representing the god of the seas.

A little artificial upland hosts the cave of the Sybil. Upholstered with sandstone, it contains a marble statue representing the Eritrean Sybil, a work of the “genius of Venanzio Bigioli”, as stated by a plaque which also states the work was created in 1839. The cave is watched by statues representing two owls and a dog. Beyond the back exit of the villa, a belvedere in the shape of a pagoda offers to visitors the panorama of the whole garden. Other interesting structures in the garden are the temple to Apollo, the altars, the niches and the chapels dedicated to divinities, and the gothic aviary.

Several water games and animated scenes reveal the ludic character imposed to the place by the ancient owners: especially interesting are the “scene”in the gothic chapel, where a monk has arms that can be activated with a mechanism, and the one in the lady gardener’s house, whose door can be opened from a distance to reveal the image of a woman.
