The Carnival of Pozza and Umito (two hamlets of Acquasanta Terme, municipality in the hinterland of the Piceno area) is animated by music of popular character and in longevity it is the second after that of Fano. It represents a reminiscence of archaic agrarian rituals that sink their roots in the Augustan period and are related to the fertility of the Earth. The Carnival, which takes place in the lands of the high Valley of Garrafo, has its highest expression during the parade of the Saturday before Shrove Tuesday, on the occasion of which the inhabitants of the hamlets wear masks of regular characters such as the accordion players, the married couple, the couple hell-guard and the famous group of the "Zanne" that wanders around the streets of the two villages in a colorful dress of Lombard origins imported by Lombard masons who, in the sixteenth century, came to this area to perform work squaring of stone and marble. The procession then moves, with shouts and celebrations, stopping from house to house at the invitation of the owners who offer, on a banquet set up on the road, typical and strictly homemade sweet ravioli with chestnuts and Castagnole (Carnival damselfish), along with cooked wine. All is welcomed by the music of the Saltarello (an Italian dance characterized by energetic skips and leaps), until the end point of the parade is reached and the traditional ballet takes place. This unique event leads the viewer to immerse in the purest tradition and live the ancient traditions linked to this territory. Moreover the event offers the chance to appreciate some peculiar resources such as the many travertine works, the complex history of the area and some healing sulfur waters of the local spa open from May to November.
Being linked to the traditions of Ascoli Piceno, Offida and Castignano, the Carnival of Pozza and Umito represents one of the most important events of the year in the entire Piceno territory.
