The little hamlet of Cagnano, placed on a rock spur above the village of Acquasanta Terme, was probably funded in the X century. Its position leads to believing that it was a military outpost built to control the underlying road. Its name means “hamlet placed on the rift”. Though its story is marked by such terrible calamities as raids by looters, plague brought by lansquenets, long lasting famines, fires and destruction, the stone buildings, the portals, the rich natural environment, the colourful landscapes of Cagnano do still keep, nowadays, the ancient beauty of a village where time looks like having stopped. The vast surrounding territory is characterized by travertine quarries, by the lonesome Pizzo Murello mountain, with its plains and woody slopes, by the Acquasanta spa with its sulphurous waters, by the area of the National Park of Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga, with its naturalistic peculiarities, and by the nearby hamlets. Due to its morphology and its nature, that territory offers to lovers of excursions many itineraries along the ancient mule tracks used till the last century by people in the surrounding boroughs to get to the administrative centre of Acquasanta Terme; not very far away, by the Rio Garrafo river, there is also an important Karstic system.
