Servigliano – Jousting Tournament of "Castel Clementino"

In 1450 the Abbot of Farfa gave the Plains of San Gualtiero to the Community of Servigliano. To celebrate the event, games were organized. Since 1969, this historic moment is re-enacted over the weekend of the third Sunday in August, through the Jousting Tournament of "Castel Clementino", an historical re-enactment in the fifteenth century costume.
The re-enactment begins on Saturday evening when a thousand torches on the walls, arches and doors are the frame of figures in medieval costume, followed by drums and blasts of golden clarions. The herald, with austere grandeur, from the municipal balcony festooned with the flags of the districts, announces the solemnity of the evening.
The parade, with its over 300 participants in pre-Renaissance costumes, offers a unique and fascinating trip into the history of Italian costume, with wonderful clothes, made by local tailors since 1969, as perfect reproductions of models taken from the paintings of the masters of the time, such as Crivelli, Ghirlandaio and others. These great skills have led to the making of the Accademia Clementina, where research on the style of dresses dated end '400 is updated continuously.
After the sumptuous parade and the show of flag-wavers, is the Giostra dell’Anello (Ring Tournament) among the knights representing the five districts with its duels, the bully sound of horses' hooves and the victory. This event is the central one in the re-enactment, where winners can rejoice and brag of the rag conquered while to the losers it just remains the honor of arms (sometimes not even that).
The Palio, which is the subject of contention, was until 2005 painted by various artists who have made more or less showy drapery, almost all of rare beauty.
