Cagli – Church of S. Francesco

The Church of San Francesco is in the same- name square with the Angelo Celli’s bronze statue by the sculptor Biancini, placed in 1959 before an arcade of 1885,built between 1234 and 1240 extra-muros. It is considered the emblem of the Gothic “medioappennico” (middle-Apennine) and it is the oldest Franciscan Church in the Marche region.
The elegant polygonal apse, dominated by the soaring bell tower, ending with a  12 m high cotto pinnacle, shows a refined  color balance obtained by contrasting the clear vestments made by corniola  stone, to the fictile lacework that  serves as a crowning, as well as the sides courses by pilasters. The 1348 marble portal, with twisted columns and lance-shaped alternating with square pillars, the lunetta bears an emaciated fresco attributed to Guido Palmerucci and showing the Madonna and Child with San Francesco and Giovanni Battista. The frescoes in the vast interior of a single room covered up by whitewash in 1579,  re-emerge in the recovered thirteenth century apse as well as in the counter-façade. In the middle of the wide choir is the organ, the oldest one in the Marche region, attributed to Baldassare Malamini from Emila Romagna,  who would have made it in the last decades of the sixteenth century.
