Marche in montagna

Mountains province Macerata

There are numerous mountain ranges in the province of Macerata. The most important one is the chain of the Sibillini Mountains: it is the fourth highest mountain massif in the continental Apennines (after Gran Sasso, Maiella and Velino-Sirente), located in the Umbrian-Marche Apennines, along the primary watershed of the central Apennines, between Marche and Umbria (Macerata, Ascoli Piceno, Fermo, Perugia). The territory is included in the homonymous National Park of the Sibillini Mountains.

The most significant mountains are:

Monte Bove (2,169 m.) is part of the Sibillini Mountains chain. The Bove massif has two main peaks: to the south (2,169 m.) and to the north (2,112 m.). To the north-west there is a rocky peak, Croce di Monte Bove, clearly visible from the valley below with a large metal cross.

Lame Rosse: it is not a real mountain, but particular gullies formations that affect a sedimentary succession with a typically reddish color. The site is located in the municipality of Fiastra, in the complex of the Sibillini Mountains; under them flows the Fiastrone river which originates from the homonymous lake.

Monte Rotondo (2,101 m.) is one of the massifs that forms the northern subgroup of the Sibillini mountains in the Umbria-Marche Apennines. It is the last complex at the northern end of the range comprising peaks over 2000 meters. It is entirely included in the province of Macerata between the municipalities of Bolognola, Ussita and Fiastra. The Fiastrone stream and all its main tributaries arise from the massif.

Monte Prata: (1,850 m.) is included in the National Park of the Sibillini Mountains and boasts the homonymous ski resort.

Pizzo Tre Vescovi is a mountain that is part of the Apennine group of the Sibillini mountains, in the Umbrian-Marche Apennines. The peak is characterized by a rocky crown of gray limestone, and is located exactly at the border point of three municipalities: Bolognola and Ussita in the province of Macerata and Montefortino in the province of Fermo. The slopes of Pizzo Tre Vescovi are crossed by numerous paths easily accessible from the Fargno Refuge, located right at the foot of the northern slope.
